Quality determinates of rice price in open bag markets in Sub-Saharan Africa

Purpose Weaknesses in the grades and standards system low-income countries across Sub-Saharan Africa undermine transparency of agricultural markets. In Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Ghana Mozambique rice is predominately sold open bags if price does not reflect its quality, then inefficiencies may lead to consumer welfare losses. Importantly, it possible that impoverished communities are priced out market due inflated inefficient prices. The objective this study examine determinates by estimating impact selected quality attributes on prices Congo, Mozambique. Design/methodology/approach We collected 363 samples from air markets Bukavu Nampula (Mozambique) 2019. Each sample was analyzed a food science lab for attributes: percentage chalk brokens, impact, length length-to-width ratio. used multiple regression analysis estimate what extent were drivers price.
